Box Mine

Box mine lies between Box Village and Corsham, underneath Box Hill. The huge network of passages overlaps the GWR main line through Box tunnel, with a total surveyed length of over 80km.

Mining here has commenced since the Roman era, continuing through to the 20th Century when much of the underground area was converted into ammunition storage for the Corsham Central Ammunition Depot (CAD).

The mine boasts a range of features and points of interest, including the central cavern known as “The Cathedral” as well as “The Red Door” – a point within the mine that connects the disused quarries to a cold-war military establishment known as Burlington Bunker.

Access into Box Mine is a hot topic with the Urbex community. A number of incidents involving ill-equipped would-be explorers has resulted in the majority of entrances to be blocked off or gated shut. Access remains possible but information is scarcely shared. Any trip into Box mine should only be attempted with suitable equipment, clothing and supplies. The sheer size of this place can make getting lost VERY easy, with usable exit points within the mine being very limited.  For this reason – I have not pinned an exact entry point on the map above. If you want information on accessing Box then please leave a comment with some contact details. I have posted full-quality versions of the maps for each section of the mine in belief that this sort of information should be freely available to genuine explorers.
