Bethel Quarry

Location
Description

Bethal quarry was potentially worked as early as the 18th century but no exact dates have been determined. It’s a fairly small but spacious site which probably makes it feel bigger than it really is. After the second world war, the quarry was reutilised by the Heinz company for growing mushrooms – a use case that continued for around 70 years.

In 2018 the site was discovered to be used as an illegal cannabis grow and two people for arrested. The reported street value of the find was £1.5 million.

Remains of both the legal and illicit activities are still very much present around the quarry and as such the area has become somewhat of a mess.

Access was traditionally via a single adit that ran a short distance from the main road. This is now locked and gated.Numerous air shafts also exist but these should not be used for gaining access.

A single ladder approxmately 25m high remains as the sole entry and exit for all persons.
